Haint blue

Savannah has a major reputation for being haunted (some even call it the most haunted city in America)—so its residents have naturally always been experts on ghosts!

One of the most fascinating traditions homeowners used to follow was painting their porch ceilings a shade known as “haint blue. The Gullah Geechee believed haints (i.e., spirits) couldn’t pass over water. The blue color of the porch was meant to trick haints into believing there was water, preventing them from entering the home.
