The most haunted city in america
Savannah was founded in 1733 as the first planned city (based on a grid system) in the country.
One thing the city’s founders didn’t plan initially?
Graveyards! Savannah lacked a dedicated graveyard for a long time. Instead, residents often buried their dead wherever they could, sometimes in unmarked graves. As the city was constructed, buildings and roads were then built on top of these graves—and the city’s reputation for hauntings naturally followed.
There have also been a number of eerie deaths / murders / suicides, all of which have added to Savannah’s mystique as the most haunted city in America. Locals lean in to this reputation, leading ghost tours at night.
The Mercer-Williams house is one of the most notorious homes in Savannah because of frequent paranormal activity and multiple deaths that have occurred on the property—including the murder that inspired John Berendt’s novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
The historic Andrew Low home is another purportedly haunted mansion
