Savannah for artists
Savannah: home to numerous ghosts and also thousands of artists. Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has been a major institution and a world-renowned art school for decades.
Paula Wallace, a former elementary school teacher, had a vision to build an institution that would help young artists launch their careers. She and her parents sold everything they owned to buy the first SCAD building downtown.
SCAD buildings dot the city, bringing economic benefits and revitalization (literally—SCAD has renovated nearly 100 historic buildings around Savannah).
If you have an extra 30 minutes, I highly recommend visiting SCADstory, a 4-D immersive storytelling experience about the school’s founding. It is by far one of the most impressive, well-designed films I’ve ever seen.
The SCAD art museum is also worth a visit, showcasing contemporary artists (also serves as a nice, cool oasis to rest from the heat). Some of the current exhibits pictured below.
